A customer in the mining industry needed a company with the experience and advanced molding expertise necessary to produce a composite blade system that would be used on a flotation device. Peridot was contracted to perform all of the required work for this high wear application, including part design, engineering, and fabrication of the custom blade system. After finalizing the design, Peridot constructed custom tooling for the part using cutting edge CNC and 3D printing equipment. The blade system was created utilizing an advanced molding process, over molding a thermally cured performance polyurethane material onto steel. A tight tolerance of ±0.015” was maintained throughout. The blade assembly was thermally post-cure to obtain the desired surface and strength. The urethane product was tested and compared against stainless steel and ceramic to ensure quality and functionality.
Overall measurements of this composite molding were a width of 12”, and height of 60”. The single blade had a length of 11-5/8”, and width of 6-1/2”. Turnaround time for this production is 4 to 6 weeks, and 100 to 200 units are fabricated annually. Peridot is a recognized leading rapid prototype specialist, experienced in all forms of production molding and secondary finishing processes. For more information about this composite over-mold blade assembly, or the other design engineering and fabrication capabilities available please see the table below or contact Peridot directly.
